Katanning Landcare proudly assist people who want to learn about the environment and keen to actively participate in making a positive difference — big and small. Their collective goal is to elevate the Shire of Katanning community by connecting farm folks and city folks with the soil, water and air we all share.
We were excited to be approached by Katanning Landcare to develop their new website in 2018 with so much of what they do aligning with our own passion for sustainable, environmentally friendly projects.
With a range of stakeholders as diverse as the community they service, from government departments to farmers to smaller community groups the new website needed to be inclusive and easy to use. This meant easy to find resources, providing members with access to the project mapping tools and access to newsletters and membership. The site also required simple online shopping with plant sales and equipment hire as well as the provision for making donations.
Katanning Landcare has a strong brand that is well known throughout the local community, so the website needed to reflect this with bright, vibrant colours and a clean elegant design.
The Katanning Landcare website is strongly connected to the vibrant colours found in their logo and throughout their branding. These colours were implemented with bold colour blocks that draw attention to key features and sections within the site. Some existing design elements were utilised to continue with existing programs such as the 10 Week Bin Transformation
Katanning Landcare provided us with many images of the local area and community events. The homepage presents a number of core components found within the site, starting with an image slider showcasing the native plant nursery, Katanning EcoWeek and professional services; further down the page the latest news articles and products can also be found.
Development of this site enabled us to roll up our sleeves with some interesting technical work from the addition of custom post types for Case Studies and Resource Documents with the capability for all staff to add and edit content from using front end forms and, for this content to be automatically displayed within the site. This content was then restricted to registered members of the site.
We migrated across the existing Project Mapping Tools with some integration required and also configured a complex product search and filter table for selling native plants to the local community.
Using Woocommerce we were able to set up a number of products for sale in the site store as well as products that can be hired by members of the local community. As a not-for-profit organisation it was also important to allow community members to make a donation.
An events page was created along with a calendar on the homepage to provide information on events that are upcoming throughout the Shire of Katanning.
The Katanning Landcare website is one we are truly proud to put our names to with strong bold colours and a simple, clean user experience. The new site features more products in store and an expansion of many sections that were in the previous site. With the online booking system we are now seeing higher rates of engagement and the site is truly becoming a community hub.
